Applications for Junior Coaches for the second round are open
Be the springboard for underprivileged youth so that their dreams come true
The Antetokounmpo brothers’ vision is to provide children from vulnerable social groups with the opportunities they lacked when growing up, and let kids experience the power of sport to change lives.
NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers – widely known as AntetokounBros – have launched AntetokounBros Academy, a program to help boys and girls (aged 12-16) and aspiring coaches (aged 18-25) realize their sporting potential, gain life skills and become better citizens.
AntetokounBros believe that through social actions and various partnerships, children will receive healthy and sound stimuli that will help them develop a balanced character, learn to work hard, be better teammates, and become better people. Not only on the basketball court, but also at home, at school and within the community.
The mission of this program in Greece is to provide access to sport, inspiration through education, and scholarships to open pathways in life.
AntetokounBros Academy is a community program that combines basketball training and educational inspiration aimed towards underprivileged young boys and girls aged 12 to 16.
The program involves 90 minutes of basketball training twice a week for 100 athletes per year at two training grounds:
Moreover, the program provides 12 training positions for junior coaches aged 18 to 25 during the season. The junior coaches will be able to participate in the training sessions of the AntetokounBros Academy under the supervision of the Head Coach Evina Maltsi, an international athlete, who has made history in women’s basketball.
In addition to the core basketball training, the program involves athlete clinics, tournament events, a series of mentoring workshops, inspirational speeches, and basketball school sessions that athletes and junior coaches will also need to attend as part of their participation. The educational sessions will be held at the Onassis Stegi.
Second season’s duration: October 2021 – June 2022
During the summer of 2019, Nike refurbished 7 basketball courts in Athens.
In the court of Lamprini, graffiti artist Billy Gee created a design inspired by the flame inside Giannis’ heart. It depicts two hands clasped in the shape of a heart at center court. It is the burning heart that motivates athletes to chase their crazy dreams.
Graffiti artist Nique curated the court of Ellinorosson. “From nothing to everything” was the brief given to the artist. According to her: “This was a very difficult project because you must draw on the ground, but I believe that the result can really act as an incentive for the kids to engage into sports. When Nike assigned me the project for the Ellinorosson court, I researched on the Antetokounmpo story and I think that he is a great source of inspiration to believe that wherever you are, or come from, if you try hard enough you can make it”.
The Academy is brought to life by Nike in collaboration with Onassis Foundation and Eurohoops Organization.
The focus of the Onassis Foundation’s mission is and will always be the individual. With priority since 1975 in the fields of culture, health and education, it creates the conditions, explores the ideas and triggers the discussions that lead to a better society. More info at onassis.org
